Nemrut Mountain Adiyaman Mesopotamia Southeast Turkey

Depending on the schedule, it is worth seeing the sunset or sunrise on the Nemrut mountain.

The Karakus Tumulus ;  The Karakus Tumulus (Monument Grave), construction is a memorial tomb of the royal family of Commagen. The Karakus Tumulus is a funerary, a hieratic, for Queen Isias and the princesses Antiochis and Aka I of Commagene, built by Mithridates II of Commagene. Queen Isias, was a Cappadocian princess who lived in the 1st century BC. Through her marriage to King Antiochus I Theos of Commagene, she became the queen of Commagene. She was half Persian and half Greek. Isias was the daughter of King Ariobarzanes I of Cappadocia.

The bridge of Cendere ;  The bridge was built over the river Cendere by the 16th legion of the Roman emperor Septimius Severus (193-211 BC). It is 120 meters long, 30 m. high and 7 m. wide, it is an important example for architecture where Roman. The columns were erected for the Emperor Septimius Severus, his wife Julia Domna, and their children Caracalla and Geta. When Geta died, the column made for him was destroyed by the order of his brother the Emperor Caracalla (211-217 AD).

New Castle (Yeni Kale) ;  New Castle, which was built yal family of Commagen. Restored by the Romans and then the Mamluks, the castle was last partially repaired by the German archologist Friedrich Karl Dörner in the 1950s. Inside the castle, there are bazaar, mosque, dungeon, waterways, dovecote ruins and inscriptions. The waterway descending from Kale to Nymphois is connected to Arsameia by a tunnel. It is still possible to reach the water by this way, which reaches 80 meters.

Arsemia ;  According to what is mentioned in the inscriptions of the king Antiochus I, Arsameia BC. It was founded by Arsemez, the ancestor of the Commagenes at the beginning of the 2nd century, opposite the Old Kahta Castle. On the ceremonial road to the south, the relief stele of Mitras, the handshake stele of Antiochus-Heracles on the ritual platform, and the largest known justification inscription in Anatolia in front of it.  There is a deep rock tunnel (158 m long) to the west of the inscription. The tomb temple and palace of Mithridathes Callinichus are located on the platform on the hill. In the palace excavations, many sculptures, a queen and the head of Antiochus were found.  

Nemrut Mountain ;  In 1987, Nemrut mountain became a member of UNESCO World Heritage list and included in the National Park. The statues are approximately 2,200 m high above the Nemrut mountain. The iconic statues of Nemrut date back to the 1st century BC. and they belong to the ancient civilization of Commagene. King Antiochus (Theos of Commagene) Antiochus united the gods of the east and the west and built the tomb on the top of the mountain flanked by huge statues (9-10 m high) of himself, of mythical figures Hercules / Artagnes, Zeus / Ahura Mazda, Hera / Teleia and Apollon / Mithras, lions, eagles and various Greek gods. They are carved around 63 BC. During the reign of Antíoco-I, the emperor of the king Commagene. These statues were once seated, with the names of each god inscribed on them. Now the statues are down and the heads are on the ground. These gigantic heads fallen from the tomb of the King Commagene Antiochus, for over 2000 years and were first found in 1881 by Karl Sester, a German archaeologist, but the most important excavations were made by the German archologist Friedrich Karl Dörner in the years 1953-1956.Here you may wonder about the cone shape, an artificial summit, where the Antiochus burial mound was located which was hidden under the artificial limestone dome. The western terrace features a large slab representing a lion and the celestial arrangement of the stars and planets of Jupiter, Mercury, and Mars on July 7, 62 BC. Commagene Kingdom ;  The kingdom of Commagene; The region between the Taurus Mountains and the Euphrates was called Commagene during the Greek and Roman periods. Commagene was originally established as an independent kingdom in 162 BC. By Mithridates Kalinikos I. Mithridates brought together Persians and Macedonians and other communities in the area to form this powerful state and called it Commagene, which means "community of genes" in Greek. The kingdom was at the height of its splendor during the period of King Antiochus I (69-36 BC), who succeeded Mithridates. Most of the archaeological remains that survive to this day, including the burial mound at the peak of Nemrut Dag, which still refuses to reveal all its secrets, are from the time of Antiochos I.
